Zarafat’s signature baharat recipe has been the same for generations and still tastes as good, so many years on.
Zarafat is a religious grandmother who lives in the largest Druze village of Yarka. She married at the late age of thirty-two, but was sadly widowed almost two years before our visit, leaving her with six children, a number of grandchildren, and the running of the house.
Zarafat’s children are all grown up although many still live at home. She has three sons and three daughters, with her eldest son married and living in the annex flat. Her daughter-in-law spends a lot of time with her, helping around the house and learning to cook. Her eldest daughter, too, is married with young children and visits regularly so that Zarafat can enjoy being with her grandchildren. Her youngest son lives at home but is soon to attend college to study music.
