‘My family moved to Nha Trang in 1955. My father set up a successful business here, which allowed me to study in Saigon, graduating at the English Language University.
‘In 1964, when the United States bombed North Vietnam for the first time, I was only nineteen. Because I could speak English well, I was assigned to be an interpreter for the US troops. I spent a year at the US base in Danang, and helped to plan strategic moves and attacks, and became as much an advisor as an interpreter. I had to accompany the US troops wherever they went and during all battles. I remember the attack in Cam Ranh Bay.
