MSC (with its easily recognizable blue label) stands for Marine Stewardship Council. This nonprofit organization has developed an internationally recognized ecolabeling and certification program aimed at protecting our oceans. To qualify for certification, a fishery must meet the MSC standards for sustainably caught fish. These are the strictest and most comprehensive standards for wild seafood fisheries. Once a fishery is awarded the certificate, it can expect annual inspections. And every five years a complete reassessment is carried out to see whether the fishery still complies with the standards and continues to honor its commitments. If you’re curious to see which criteria a fishery must meet, just visit msc.org.
