  • About

Despite holiday spirits, August is a sharp reminder of autumn. Early varieties of cookers and dessert apples, as well as plums, green grapes, damsons and cultivated blackberries appear, in sombre contrast to the most colourful fruits of last month. Blackcurrants and raspberries are still plentiful and imported peaches, pineapples, and small seedless sultana grapes are a good buy.

Vegetables give scope for new ideas this month with the first baby marrows, sweetcorn, which has all too short a season, and the beginning of the runner beans. Tomatoes and cucumbers are plentiful and cheap so now is a good time to use them to make any sweet pickles or preserves.
