I grew up in Memphis, TN in the Whitehaven neighborhood not too far from Graceland, Elvis Presley’s house. I didn’t grow up in the projects but near one. My family wasn’t rich but we never went hungry since my mother and father both had jobs. I guess I grew up like your average black kid in 80’s and 90’s America with a 2 parent household. Somewhere between the Huxtables and the Evans’s.
A native of Memphis, Tennessee, my first real memories recall cooking beside my grandmother making butter rolls. She never revealed her recipe to me, but she left me with so much more: A desire to make people happy with good food.
