When I was nine-years-old, my mother entered a cooking competition for PM Magazine. I remember her working on her recipe for a dish that we had been eating on Sundays most of my life: MAMB’s chicken—it was her initials, Mary Alice Murray Bowling’s. I helped her cut the onions and peppers and my sister made the seasoning. We spent the whole day with her at the mall as she competed. When the judges came by to tell her she had won... it was such a great feeling to see her smile and look at my sister and me and say, “We won this together!”
