I wait all year for the zucchini plants to blossom, but really I’m mostly looking forward to the squash blossoms, those tender flowers from the zucchini, that I need to make my grandmother’s recipe for Squash Blossom Pancakes.

My grandmother, Assunta Maria Lucibello Bigio, was from Amalfi, Italy, and she always referred to the squash blossoms as “shoo-deel.” My mother and I use this reference, as well, but I cannot find a dictionary definition that can give me the correct spelling in Italian, so if anyone out there can help me, I’d be ever so grateful.
