Unfortunately for the grey mullet, its reputation for mooning around in harbours visible just under spluttering boats and floating petrol slicks leaves few with any desire to lift a forkful towards the mouth. However, this is one of my favourite fish and I would, you might think rashly, state that I consider it as good as the sea bass. What’s more, it is gratifyingly cheap, which prompts others to again think it inferior. If taken from clean waters they are delicious.
Notoriously wary of the hook and easily spooked, don’t take the grey mullet’s wandering laid-back appearance for granted. One false move and in a flash they’re gone. I have heard of them caught with chocolates (obviously not coffee creams) and bits of red thread, but the following method is one I heard of in a pub in Ireland and find particularly intriguing.
