Trifolium pratense A perennial herb generally distributed throughout the British Isles, it occurs in grassy places, flowering from May to September.
Red clover is believed to have been first grown in this country as a cultivated crop in 1645. The American Indians ate it in several ways: the foliage was eaten fresh before flowering; the Digger tribe cooked it by placing moistened layers one upon another in a stone oven; and the Apache Indians boiled it with dandelions, grass and pigweed. The Pomo tribe held special clover feasts and dances in early spring to celebrate the appearance of this food plant.
