  • About

Porphyra umbilicalis Common around our coasts, growing on rocks and stones especially where the rocks are embedded in sand, this seaweed can be found from March onwards, even on a day when there is only a small tide, as it grows on any level of the tide-covered shore.

There are quite a few species that are very similar, forming large, thin, lobed sheets attached to the rocks by a very small disc. The species vary in colour from brown to purple to greenish but in practice you can mix together any species you find. In fact, sea lettuce is often mixed with laver in making laver bread.
