  • About

Hops flower in July and August.

Humulus lupulus This perennial climber is widely distributed but probably because it has often escaped from cultivation. The hop occurs in hedges and thickets and flowers in July and August.

The hop is first mentioned by Pliny as a garden plant of the Romans, who used only the young shoots, in spring, as a vegetable. Formerly, it was sold in markets, tied in bundles, for table use. The shoots can also be eaten raw in salads and the early foliage may be used as a pot-herb.
