I never cooked for my father ‘But I don’t understand why you left such a brilliant career as an electrician to become a mere cook,’ my father said.

My father was a wonderful man, a very intelligent man. He could speak perfect Turkish and he communicated well in French and German. He became a volunteer tutor, helping all the neighbourhood children with their studies simply because he loved helping and loved learning himself. Yet he remained a labourer all his life and he lived happily. His interest was helping his children, to the best of his ability, to achieve what they wanted to do with their lives. That’s why I got a surprise when he came out with such a comment.
