Melbourne is quite rightly famed for its vibrant café culture and eclectic food styles, and in recent years it seems like its Eastern cousin of Sydney has been catching up. Together these cities reflect the growing desire for coffee, tea and cake culture that is spreading throughout Australia. Coffee drinking - and the never-ending quest for a decent coffee - has become an integral part of the local lifestyle and as a result there has been an explosion of neighbourhood coffee shops, bakeries and pâtisseries in both cities. It seems that locals expect more than the perfect macchiato or brew of chai, they now want all manner of cakes, pastries and tarts to go with their regular cuppa. And this new band of artisan cafés and pâtisseries are only too happy to help.
