Calalu is a West Indian soup made from the greens of Colocasia esculenta or Xanthosoma spp. (or even okra and amaranth leaves). Calalú is the Spanish form, Callaloo, the English spelling of a word perhaps borrowed by slaves from the indigenous Tupi word caárurú. Callaloo is also the title of a journal of African and African-American writing published by Johns Hopkins University Press.
