Sift and mix flour, oatmeal, sugar and spices, and rub in the fat. Add soda, syrup and egg. Mix well to a fairly stiff consistency. Form into balls and place a little apart on greased baking-sheets; put 1 a blanched almond on top of each. Bake in a moderate to warm oven (350°–335° F., Gas 4–3). Allow to cool slightly before removing from sheet.
