At a bakery by a gleaming river on the border of the Gauja national park, these radziņš -crescent-moon-shaped pastries filled with savoury cheese or spiced meat and topped with crunchy seeds — were the first snack I came across in Latvia. They reminded me of the sweet, yeasty rogaliki (also known as rugelach) I remember from my childhood in Poland, but because of their salty filling, they are perhaps better suited to a beer snack than breakfast.
