Bruin the bear, who breaks free from the shackles of slavery, can be seen as a symbol of the Estonian spirit. Sadly, though, the bear’s story does not end well — he is destroyed by his own kind, out of jealousy. Still, his escape represents a brave bid for freedom, and Masing, the early-nineteenth-century author of the poem ‘Bruin’, was a great advocate for the Estonian language, with an egalitarian attitude to literature that was unusual in his time.
