Lithuanian is an ancient language that has been preserved through a rich oral tradition. It sounds beautiful to my ears, therefore I have gone with the Lithuanian name for this cake, Medutis, rather than the more common, Russian Medovik or Polish Miodownik. Known all over Eastern Europe in various guises, some say it was invented in the early nineteenth century in the court of Tsar Alexander the Great, while others claim its roots to be Ashkenazi Jewish.
