It is rewarding to bake your own biscuits to serve with cheese and they are easy to make.


  • 250 g (8 oz) plain flour, plus extra for rolling
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder


Preheat the oven. Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt. Rub in the butter with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add the cream and just enough water to make a firm dough. Roll it out thinly on a lightly floured surface and cut it into 7.5 cm (3-inch) rounds with a biscuit cutter.
