Chess pies are a Southern speciality that go back to the eighteenth century. The most likely explanation for the name is that with their high sugar content they could be kept almost indefinitely in a chest. This pie is far less sweet than an early version would have been, but it is still quite delicious with its mixture of dates and walnuts.
