Being able to whip up refried beans at a moment’s notice almost feels like a superpower. They are great to have at the ready in your refrigerator or freezer. The Oaxacan way of making them is more labor intensive than the usual refried beans found around Mexico, but the flavor that you develop is worth it. Avocado leaves add a deep, anise-like flavor. You can buy them dried online, or find them at some Mexican markets.
