The cake that won the prestigious red, white and blue championship ribbon with gold tassels for cookery at Canberra’s centenary year show in 2013 almost didn’t make it to the judging bench. ‘I was just going to cut it up and put it in the kid’s lunchboxes because I didn’t think it was any good,’ says Tanya McArthur. Fortunately, her eldest son talked her out of it.
