Sugar cookies are pure fun to eat, and with a few tips, decorating them can be even more fun. See pages 248-249 for my tricks for making sugar cookies that your kids will love!
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder. Set aside.
In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (or in a large mixing bowl, using a handheld mixer), cream together the butter and sugar on medium speed for 1 to 2 minutes, until light and creamy. Add the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla and beat for 3 to 5 minutes, until light and fluffy.
