Used for their concentrated flavor—not to replace fresh mushrooms when these are a key ingredient—dried mushrooms are convenient to have on hand and simple to prepare. They can be added, as is, to long-simmered foods; or, if you prefer, soak them for a few minutes in warm water before adding them to the pot. Use the flavorful soaking liquid, too, or save it for soup.
