In a large saucepan, bring the water to a boil over high heat. Add the salt and reduce the heat to a simmer. Slowly add the polenta, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. Cook, stirring, for 20 minutes. Add the kernels and cook another 5 minutes, or until the polenta is smooth and slightly stiff. Remove from the heat and stir in the butter and cheese. Serve immediately.
