Whenever Perry is mentioned, it usually provokes the question, what’s that? In fact it’s the equivalent of cider, but made with pears. I remember the branded version, Babycham as a kid because my grandfather kept those saucer-shaped glasses in the house for special occasions.

It might have been a popular drink with the ladies in those days but it probably damaged the reputation of real Perry. Sadly the art of Perry-making hardly exists these days — it’s time for a revival, perhaps.
