This cake would appear to have been created towards the end of the nineteenth century to honour the marriage of Queen Victoria’s granddaughter to Prince Louis of Battenberg.
Preheat the oven to moderate 180°C (350°F/Gas 4). Line two loaf tins, each about 20 x 8 x 7 cm (8 x 3 x 2¾ inches) (see Chef’s techniques). Grease the paper and dust with flour.
