Because my brothers and I were brought up with home-made cakes, bought ones inevitably acquired an irresistible appeal. Occasionally an aunt arrived with some shop cakes in a square white box tied with paper ribbon, and at tea-time the delicacies were demolished with gusto. We all loved the chocolate cup cakes in silver paper cases – especially nibbling off the rime of icing on the edge. I’ve always found them a sure-fire winner on a fund-raising cake stall.
