When I ran my cake stall, this was the first recipe requested by a customer. Quite soon, on market mornings, I was too busy selling cakes to scribble out cake details. So I wrote Cake Stall instead, with my customers at Tiverton Pannier Market mainly in mind. This recipe came from a small 1920s cookery book but I can’t remember which one! These biscuits can be tricky to make, though the flavour is worth the effort.
