This rich soup made with hominy and shrimp originated in the Mexican state of Jalisco and is customarily served on Christmas Eve after midnight mass. In Mexico, children parade around their neighborhoods dressed as pilgrims looking for a place to shelter the Holy Family. They are refused until finally they arrive at a neighbor’s house—where traditional treats await them—or their parish church where mass is celebrated on Noche Buena.
