Soak the peas overnight and drain unless they are the quick-cooking variety, in which case omit this step. Put the peas into a saucepan with enough water to cover and stir in the massala (curry powder). Simmer, covered, until tender. Add the cumin, salt and freshly ground pepper to taste, the onion and garlic, and stir to mix well. The mixture should be fairly dry. Set aside.
