These crisp, fragile wafers are rich with butter and have a high proportion of sugar that makes them crackle like glass. The recipe is loosely adapted from the handwritten manuscript of Mrs. Henry W. Darling, compiled from about 1882 to 1893 in Schenectady, New York.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
