Benne (sesame) seeds were brought to the American South by slaves from Africa. This not-quite-sweet cookie is a hybrid—a combination of old South Carolina recipes for benne wafers and Italian sesame-coated biscotti. The crisp but tender biscuits bake to a pale gold and have the haunting, toasty flavor of sesame oil. They improve in flavor as they keep.
