Both sour cream and buttermilk raisin pies are old Midwestern favorites. Sour cream pies were also popular in California (before the days of “California cuisine”), sometimes made with locally grown chopped dates. There are also Southern incarnations: “Belle of New Orleans Pie” (also known as “Famous Amber Pie”) is made with sour cream, raisins, vinegar and pecans, spiced and topped with whipped cream.
