Like a fluffy pancake, bara planc is one of the traditional teatime treats in the Welsh farmhouse. In the old days the leavening was yeast, and bacon the likely accompaniment when jam was a rare treat and butter a valuable trade item.

Ingredients

  • 500 g strong white flour

Method

Sift the flour with the baking powder and salt and blend in the sugar. Whisk in the eggs and milk till you have a batter as thick and smooth as double cream.

Place a bakestone, griddle or heavy frying pan on a low flame and let the heat come into the metal, gently. Wipe the surface with a cloth dipped in the melted butter, and test the heat with a drop of batter. If the batter sizzles a
