In Puritan Boston no work was done on the Sabbath, which lasted from sundown on Saturday until sundown on Sunday. Women cooked their Sunday meal of baked beans the day before in the slow heat of a fireplace or took the family bean pot to the local baker who would return it with some Boston Brown Bread in time for the Sabbath. Home-made baked beans are a very special treat.
