Waffles are a crisp cake made by cooking batter on a special purpose waffle iron, which gives the waffle a honeycombed pattern. Waffles are traditionally served with a sweet sauce such as maple syrup, and cream or ice cream, or you can drizzle them with a warm chocolate sauce and top with vanilla ice cream.

Method

  1. Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda, sugar and a pinch of salt into a large bowl and make a well in the centre.
  2. Whisk the eggs, melted butter and buttermilk in a jug and gradually pour into the well, whisking until the batter is just smooth. Set aside for 10 minutes. Preheat the waffle iron.
  3. Brush the waffle iron with melted butter. Pour
