Made with lard, it’s chocolate all the way—moist fudgy cake


  • c. lard
  • 3 squares unsweetened chocolate
  • ¾ c. <


  • Melt lard in 2- to 3-qt. saucepan over low heat. Add chocolate and stir until melted. Remove from heat.
  • Mix ¾ c. sugar and cornstarch thoroughly. Stir into chocolate mixture. Add 1 c. milk; stir and cook over low heat until smooth and thick. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature. (Set pan in cold water to speed cooling.)
  • Sift remaining dry ingre
