Ingredients

  • ½ c. shortening
  • ½ c. sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • ½ c. molasses
  • c. strong, hot coffee
  • c. sifted flour
  • tsp. baking powder
  • ¾ tsp. salt
  • ¼ tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp. ground cloves
  • Creamy Coffee Icing

Method

  1. Cream together shortening and sugar; blend in egg, molasses and coffee.
  2. Sift together dry ingredients; add to creamed mixture and blend well. Pour into greased and waxed paper-lined 13 X 9 X 2" pan.
  3. Bake in moderate oven (350°) 25 minutes. While warm, frost with Creamy Coffee Icing. Cool in pan on rack, then cut in 3 X 1" bars.
