Combine 1½ c. sugar, water and lemon slices in saucepan. Place over medium heat; bring to boil.
Add prunes, and simmer gently over low heat, uncovered, 20 minutes. Cool; drain well. With sharp paring knife, slit prunes open and carefully remove pits.
