Tabsi is derived from Turkish tabs ‘tray,’ which must have been adopted during the Ottoman era. This is an easy and fast dish, but you’ll be amazed at how tasty the tamarind will make the fish. Obviously, we do not believe that fish and tamarind do not get along well in the stomach, unlike modern Egyptians, who believe that combining samak, laban, tamrihindi (fish, milk, tamarind) is the epitome of incongruity.
