When my parents told us there was a funeral or wedding coming up, my heart would skip a beat in excitement. My excitement was in anticipation of having gemmer, the Afrikaans word for ginger. (Most indigenous language speakers refer to it as gemere, with the last ‘e’ pronounced.)

I have discovered that no one really had a recipe for it: not the old mamas in the kitchen, not my folks, my gran, no one. So after much fiddling, I’ve come up with the ratios and quantities myself. Apparent
