Kuchen, in German, just means cake. In America, it means something more specific – that yeasted, plain, but often fruit-topped, coffee cake that the German immigrants brought with them to the New World. As you might expect, it is good with coffee, and makes a fabulous breakfast if you’ve got people staying and you want to sit around the table eating, drinking, talking, reading the papers in an aromatic fug of apple-pie spice and buttery yeasty dough.
