Growing up Chinese-American meant, among other things, that we rarely enjoyed the sugary-sweet desserts so popular in American cooking. Instead, slices of fresh orange were the standard dessert. On special occasions we would enjoy an almond-flavoured jelly. This Chinese jelly is made with agar-agar, which can be found in Chinese grocers as well as Japanese food stores and health-food shops.
