It may sound slightly odd to have hot pepper with a fruit dessert; the taste is a little startling, and your cheeks might pucker slightly, but it is very enjoyable. Leave it out if you prefer. Either buy some vanilla ice cream to serve with it or make your own.

Ingredients

  • ½ small pineapple, peeled and cored
  • 1 mango, peeled and stoned
  • 2 bananas, peeled and tossed in lime juice

Method

  1. Cut all the fruit into 2.5-cm/1-inch cubes (or thereabouts) place in a bowl and mix gently.
  2. Strain the orange and lime juices (you should have about 225 ml/1 cup in total).
  3. Add all the hot citrus syrup ingredients to a non-stick pan, with the exception of the zest. Stir and heat until it reduces a little, about 5–10 minutes.
