Potatoes were brought to Spain from Ecuador in 1565 by explorer and conquistador Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada. After it was discovered that sailors who ate potatoes during long voyages did not get scurvy, Basque sailors from northern Spain began to grow potatoes, and the tubers became a standard provision on Spanish ships. That is probably how the potato first reached Cuba.
