I think it’s important to introduce young children to spices as early as possible. Spice does not have to mean heat. Cumin, my favourite spice, has a rather addictive flavour and can be used in all sorts of dishes without being hot.

Serve these spiced lentils with basmati rice, with poppadums or naan bread, or with grilled meats. A spoonful of yoghurt can be stirred in at the end to give a creamier finish.
