Houmous makes perfect dipping food for children. Though lots of shops sell it ready-made, it often contains preservatives and other additives. Making your own is easy, particularly if you use tinned chickpeas.

Ingredients

  • 400 g tin of chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 2-4 cloves of garlic, peeled and roughly chopped

Method

Put the chickpeas into a pan with the garlic and about 4 tablespoons of water. Cover and heat for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat and cool a little.

A good-quality blender produces the best houmous; otherwise use a food processor. Spoon the chickpeas and garlic into the blender or food processor with any remaining cooking liquid and blend on a high speed, stopping
