This is an adaptation of a recipe developed by Linda B. Ebert, manager of the housing and food services test kitchen at Pennsylvania State University. She believes that it closely resembles the original secret recipe, and it tastes pretty ranchy to me. (Besides dressing salads with it, I sometimes use it in place of mayonnaise on sandwiches.)

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion salt
  • teaspoon ground oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon white pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon dried chives
  • ¼ teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Combine mayonnaise, herbs, and spices in a mixing bowl, then mix with an electric beater, first at low speed for about 5 seconds, then at medium speed until smooth. Scrape dressing down sides of bowl and pour in buttermilk slowly, mixing at high speed, until mixture is very smooth. Refrigerate for at least 12 hours. Stir well before serving.
