Ice creams are an integral part of summer life in Greece. When I was a child, the ice cream van would make its first appearance in our Athenian neighbourhood around Easter. For us children it was pure magic! We would run to it excitedly, waiting our turn and brandishing a small coin in our hands. In those days, the late 1940s, our fridges were primitive and worked with a big slab of ice, which was bought every morning. Life was changing rapidly, though, and in the mid-1950s a real ice cream
